Family Insight Guide | Day 4 |

Discovering your family's core values: What defines your family team?

What drives your family?

What is it that makes your family team unique?

What values do you uphold on a day-to-day basis?

Family values are the attitudes and beliefs that define the family’s behavior and expectations.

We have a set of 11 family values that we have displayed in our dining room and each of us knows that they are the defining attributes of team Crocker.

Our values set a standard that we try to live by but also reflect that we are not perfect, and we need grace when we make mistakes. They are always used as an opportunity for celebration and growth and, not a tool to put each other down.

Our values guide our discipline, give us a sense of belonging and identity and give us a base to stand upon in hard times.

Activity time:

  1. Head over to our YouTube video on family values to learn more and get some ideas of what you could put in yours. - Grace Fueled Family Values - the secret to a family full of Grace. - YouTube

  2. As parents make a list of all the things that you value from you and your kids. These can be behaviours or character traits.

  3. Now ask your kids ‘What are the things we do as a family that make us who we are?’ Lead the discussion so you can get some good ideas from them.

  4. Put these together and make a values poster/board for your family. See our example in our YouTube video.

Pro tip - Talk about your values regularly and use them for discipleship and discipline but never forget to add grace.

Pro tip - Revisit your values every 3-6 months and update them based on what your current family needs. For example, we added ‘truthfulness’ to ours recently as one of our kids had taken to telling lies.

Pro tip - Be sure to keep the list positive. i.e. write ‘show kindness’ instead of ‘no fighting’. Keeping things positive gives you all something to work towards and takes away any shame.
